The history of Garland Camera reads like a family photo album.
Jim started out as a camera repairman in 1957. Eight years later, he began his own repair business "on a shoestring." Then people asked to buy cameras from him, so he added a sales floor. After nine years in Ridgewood Shopping Center, Garland Camera moved to 1401 Northwest Highway, its home for the past 26 years.
Garland Camera has kept service as their main focus. "We still do repairs," Jim noted. "At one time, we were the only store with in-house repairs. Today we are certified to do warranty repairs for Canon, Minolta, Fuji and Bronica." In addition to sales of Nikon, Canon, Minolta, Pentax, Yashica and Fuji, Garland Camera offers darkroom equipment and a processing lab for amateur and professional photographers.
Garland Camera employs three in the service center: five on the sales floor and four in the lab. Among the employees, Kent Richeson and Michelle Richeson both started working for their family business early. Kent began sweeping floors at age 12 and by the time he was 14, he was repairing instamatics. "He strayed at age 19 to another business, but came back six years ago," his father said. "Michelle has worked with us since she was 17."
In August 2007, Kent took ownership the Garland location after closing the Mesquite, TX location. Michelle Richeson is also part of this new family ownership change. "We will still do what we do best", said Kent. "Garland Camera strives to be customer service oriented - what a small shop should be."
Garland Camera is now online. Kent, owner of GCR, is happy about being online, "We are now able to do business with everyone around the US and around the world." Garland Camera recently added an online store. "Our store online will now allow us to make sure everyone around the globe gets what they need without fear of being taken advantage of."
